have a player that chose mage hand as thier can trip fir being a higher elf, and now they want to multiclass into a spell caster class that auto gets mage hand.
They want to know if they can pick a different can trip from mage hand to replace that spell.
If they'd chosen "cantrip X" to begin with, and got mage hand later, they'd have: "cantrip X" + mage hand.
If you allow them to choose "cantrip X" as a different "automatic cantrip" they'll have: "cantrip X" + mage hand.
The only difference I can see is that they had access to mage hand for a level or 3 early - but then they lost access to "cantrip X" for those same levels.

Hardly game breaking, and I'd allow it. Even if you find a stickler DM, there is a way around it (sorta).
Most spell casters have the clause,
Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the [class] spells you know and replace it with another spell from the [class] spell list...
So the player needs to take one more level in the first class to swap it out for something other than Mage Hand. Then in the following level, get Mage Hand back. (Yes, you wouldn't have the spell for one level, but as I said, this is only for the stickler DM's)

What do you guys think? Should this be allowed?
Yes. No question.
Changing acantrip is hardly game breaking. Better save the “no” for when it matters.
Yes. It's not a big change and you can sort of RP it as they just learn a new cantrip (even though they're technically switching it)
