I couldn't afford any module books back when I started DMing but the homebrew setting and storyline I'm doing has wound up very Demon/Abyss-centric, and I'm thinking of trying to find some good content in the spirit of this, just so I'm not totally clueless on what rules for demon-summoning portals, etc, are, especially in the context of:
"Killing rampaging gnolls rarely warrants such a blessing, but slaying the high priest of Tiamat as he attempts to summon the Dragon Queen might."
Those kinds of rules and things. Would content from the Out Of The Abyss module have anything on the kinds of quests/missions players may go on to thwart demon summonings, and what the NPCs would be seeking? I was working on custom artifacts (specifically a set of 5 eyes of a Demon Prince* that can be attuned to and allow some kind of portal to open?) but I kind of wanted to look into something for guidelines, and tips on this or any other content in other books, DM's Guild, etc, before my players chew through this and get there before I have time to get my hands around it. I feel like I constantly see it MENTIONED that portals can open and what-not, but not the actual mechanics, or what kind of items, etc, so maybe I'm just not reading thoroughly or in the right parts of the books.
*The Demon Prince is a homebrew concept I made, a re-skin of Yeenoghu with an aquatic/Sahuagin/Merrow/etc sway instead of Gnolls. He's enslaved by the Demogorgon, and is basically trying to open a pathway for him.
I wouldn’t get out of the abyss for this. It’s a great adventure but not as good for just raw demonic info. (However it is really good for underdark survival.) I would instead get Mordenkainen’s Tomb Of Foes.
Honestly, after perusing a bit of the Underdark/setting information, it definitely didn't have a LOT of things that offered more information, but since I already had a discount from getting some of the bestiary singlets on the market (Troglodyte specialist, etc) from before Mordenkainen was announced, I went ahead and bought it. It's sort of my cup of tea, and as someone who likes to do world-settings that are a bit more off-beat, it's really helpful as a read.
And BLESS UNEARTHED ARCANA! Oh my gosh, that's an awesome find - the lists of unique material components on the summoning spells really help!

You want this Unearthed Arcana to handle demon summoning rules and ideas.
