Hey-o! So I'm working on creating the bones of a new Tyranny of Dragons based campaign--I know HotDQ is pretty railroady and doesn't give the players a ton of choice. I've had a session zero with two of my players, and they both intimated that they were heavily interested in more roleplaying rather than just straight up combat. I've already got a couple ideas for other storylines, while keeping the central "oh no, cult of dragons is summoning Tiamat, halp, stahp oh no!" plot.
One of them involves a fallen aasimar Conquest paladin (NPC) that is working on indirectly aiding the cult by order of Zariel to get Tiamat out of the Nine Hells as an initial incursion into the Material Plane. This gives the cult additional devilish allies, and potential to go behind Zariel's back and get one of the higher archdevils involved since Tiamat's leaving the Nine Hells represents the loss of a significant bulwark against the demon hordes. To that end, one of my PCs, Dwarven Barbarian (eventual Battlerager) hears the voice of a devil in his head, which would tie the Nine Hells arc into the larger arc.
I also have a Moon Elf Moon Druid PC who's on a quest to discover the fate of her mother. I want to tie that in to the rise of the Dragon worshippers, especially since she was a druid as well--perhaps something to do with maintaining a balance in nature and the dragons threatening to upset that balance?
What are some thoughts other people have on other potential storylines to tie in to the Tyranny of Dragons story?

Your question is a little open-ended. D&D can be heavily modifiable so there is no right or wrong answer in this regard. ToD has many, many problems and there are plenty of holes that can be filled with other story arc's etc.
One thing that ToD introduces heavily are the many different factions in Faerun: Harpers, Zentarim, Emerald Enclave, Lords Alliance etc. ToD also introduces many characters who represent those factions (Waterdeep Council). But ToD does not give you quests or stories/arc's around these factions.
So I suggest if you are looking to add new storylines to ToD, you use stories and quests that revolve around these factions and their ideals. It reinforces the overall ToD end game which is basically a massive multifaction battle with Tiamat. It gets your players more familiar with these factions which show up repeatedly in many other campaigns that WotC releases. it helps build rapport and levels within these factions which players can use to their advantage etc.
I added Githyanki Allies riding Red dragons to the mix in our game. It gives me a chance to develope some of my own lore to the Vlaakith and Tiamat alliance as it is still a mystery as to exactly what happened when the agreement was made. Plus the never knowing when Gith are gonna pop up and ambush your party makes for a harrowing session.
