I've been running a short (relatively ~14 3hr sessions) campaign because my players and I are in college so we don't have a whole lot of time, and so I've been running a pretty railroaded campaign so far. Is there a way to make a short campaign less railroaded but still exciting?

You should try to have 2-3 backup plans in your bag at all times. You should also have a bottle of improvisation in your bag as well.
Lay out some hints and let your players loose.
