I am writing a campaign where the overarching antagonist is a very old and powerful druid who “snapped” and plots to rid the land of civilization. The druid aims to do this using plagues: pest, disease, war.
In the first adventure, the group follows a villain who (as an unknowing agent in the druid’s plot) wants to unearth a long lost treasure. This treasure however, contains eggs, which if they hatch, would unleash terrible beasts (the first plague).
Does anyone have advice on monsters I could use for this? What would be in the eggs? What kind of monster would be considered a dangerous pest?
It is a generally heavily forrested area. I expect my party of 4 to be around level 3 by the time of the encounter. It would be a cool option if the villain drops one of the eggs and the party has to fight one or more of the monsters before containing the rest of the eggs.
Any help, pointers, or criticism would be greatly appreciated!
Rust Monsters might be of interest. They would damage the structural integrity of cities, destroy weapons civilization has to fight against the druid-- Could be dangerous when used as a weapon.
For a sort of strange "swarm" race of pests, not much beats the Kruthik. For lower level adventurers, they come in Young Kruthik and Adult Kruthik varieties, with later introduction of the Kruthik Hive Lord being a thing you can do. Otherwise, if you want to keep with the strange monsters that could grow into serious pests over time, maybe something like a Chuul might hit the spot?

Rust monsters would work perfectly within the motivation of the antagonist. And with the Chuul.. I get a whole Dark Tower - lobstrocity vibe. Would be great for a fight.
