'The slimy tether is immune to damage, but it is severed if there is no opening at least 1 inch wide between the oblex’s main body and the simulacrum'
So its immune to damage. That's clear. We get that.
BUT;
'but it is severed if there is no opening at least 1 inch wide' This part, makes the first part a bit odd. In this case to me 'immune' means basically that it can't be burned or otherwise harmed by anything.. except when you step on it, hit it with anything, excellently trip over it, throw the gnome on top of it or whatever else action you would like to take.
Its not immune at all. It's super vulnerable by anything that isn't an insubstantial area effect... So basically it's vulnerable to everything physical. Hell it could get severed if someone closed a door, or a hailstone fell on it, maybe even a mouse tripping over it and falling flat.
Am I wrong? Or is this a serious flaw in the creature?
I admit the wording is a bit unclear. But when it says "there is no opening 1 inch wide between the oblex's main body and the simulacrum", I think it means "all around the oblex's body and the simulacrum".
So, if you squeeze the tether, it will reform if there is an opening 1 inch wide.
Okay. Well if that is what it means. So something like a force cage would cut it off. Or a room with a closed door (that closes very well) Otherwise the cord is none breakable.
I guess that works.
I'm gonna go see how I'll add this into my already Mindflayer creations filled campaign. :)
Yeah, I assume the tether squishes and moves if you step on it. No damage and still intact. But it would be severed if you used a Forcecage.
What I don't understand is... what happens when one entrance is closed but another remains? Like a room with two windows, and one of them gets closed. No amount of squishing is going to keep the tether from being severed, but there is still a valid opening nearby. Do people see a new tether slide through the other window?
Also, how big is the tether? I assume 1 inch since that is the size of opening it can go through... but it could be much larger and just using the amorphous trait. The picture certainly shows strands bigger than an inch!
I took that to mean that the tether is very robust, so breaking it would require something like a well fitting stone door crashing down between the main body and simulacrum. Then even if something happens that does break the tether, the oblex itself takes no damage. Thinking 'aloud here' I assume a banishment effect cast on the simulacrum would affect both parts, but if part travels through a portal that then closes that would break the tether too.
Also if there are two routes then maybe it is smart enough to have a tendril already going both ways, but if not, it is probably DM discretion if the tether can be reformed fast enough. Personally I would have the simulacrum begin to melt immediately, so if anyone is watching that will be a massive give away.

You mean that if you step on it that it will just flatten slip out from under your boot and reform next to it?
