So my players are heading to Menzoberranzan to save members of one players family and maybe some of his kind (if he chooses to do so). Now I have several different routes they can take or stumble upon that will allow them safe to safer passage into the city. What I'm also accounting for is them not happening upon or choosing to just walk through one of the gates of the city. This is where my brain is dead as to what they would encounter and what difficulty they will face entering through the gates themselves without some form of escort. I would want it to be realistic for how difficult it is to do as they are all non-drow and without contacts to the city. Though part of me would like them to have a chance to do so. I'm split on it being a no-brainer No, this won't work but try your might, and I will make this work for you if this is all you guys have. Any suggestions would surely help!
BTW: I do have out of the abyss as a source I bought to skim through for ideas but it doesn't give any information on what gate defenses look like or how they respond to random adventurers appearing before them.
The old AD&D module D3 might be helpful. It’s been a long time but I believe it assumed your players were like merchants or something so you could get in. Had lots of stuff about the noble houses and things just waiting for DMs to embellish. You can get the pdf and 5e conversion on DMsGuild.

I'll definitely look into it! Thank you!
You might also look into the Menzo Box Set that was released for 2nd edition. There may also be PDFs out there for that one.
What levels are the players and what is the party composition?
The easiest method of safe entry would be to magically disguise themselves as drow if they have the means.
