So, I'm going to run a campaign and all I've figured out that i want them to start in a tavern (no surprises there) but then i want a way to get them to the church so they can be assigned to stop Vrock, a hobgoblin warlord who is razing farms and settlement owned by the church so far I've worked out that i want to either have a church representative enter the tavern to hire mercenaries or have a job board.
Vote in the poll for the start, and as the campaign progresses i will let you guys input more about how the campaign will play out and i will provide recounts after our erratic and spontaneous sessions
I'd say church representative over a message board... character interaction is always more interesting - especially if they have to do a bit of digging to get the information out. A church representative bursting into the tavern to ask for adventurers is a bit too convinient for me. Instead, consider how your players can use their skills to work up to find about the quest:
Overhearing two farmers talking in hushed tones over their pints of ale about "trouble on the outlying farms - and I hope we're not next!" (Perception. Stealth)
An insider of the church, perhaps a layman or disgruntled priest that could be convinced to provide more information about the trouble.(Persuade. Intimidate)
Maybe the church is trying to down play the issue, so that people don't think the church can't protect them. (Investigation)
Provide multiple paths to the quest. Maybe they can be hired by a church representative - but maybe through gathering enough information from people around town, they can take the initiative, track down the hobgoblin warlord, and return triumphantly. Maybe that could set up animosity between your players and the church, who keep the locals under control by claiming they're the only ones who can protect them...

Thanks A Bunch! I'm definitely going to use this in my game
Not a problem! It's always a good idea to leave enough scope for the players to find interesting and exciting solutions to problems. Just be prepared for your simple 'go kill the hobgoblin warlord' quest to turn into an epic overarching story!
Ok Will Do, and I'm probably just going to let them do whatever they want, this is just a really obvious plot hook that the can (and probably will) ignore. (i have a that guy)
Crazy guy in the street preaching that the end times are here because the Gods have abandoned the church as shown by them not protecting the churches land.
You could have a hobgoblin raid survivor in the tavern, or begging out the front.
A minstrel playing a song "I just composed" about the troubles.
Traders/shopkeepers complaining about the impact on trade as caravans are having a hard time getting through the area.

Other hook ideas:
