So I am sending my players into the underdark to retrieve a long lost weapon, to help them defeat an evil vampire trying to take over "the world"- sort of CoS-esque. They don't really have a guide for the UD, but most of them have darkvision because of their races. I don't want this to be just a linear path I put them on, I want them to feel like they have some control, but I also do not necessarily feel like I can have an NPC guide because this is a bit of a covert operation. How can I help with them follow the right path in the craziness of the UD without much knowledge of it?
Also, I don't want this to turn into a long mini-campaign inside this campaign, but are there any encounters or events that I should have possibly happen along the way to help this part of the adventure really pop & come alive?
Thanks in advance!
