The PC's are the descendants of powerful nobles, but their family's noble titles have lost their influence. Recently the king fell prey to a disease and died. Now the king's heirs scramble to consolidate power so that they can claim the throne. The PC's have been told to travel to the capital, and attempt to influence the the struggle and put a king/queen on the throne that will benefit their respective families.
They meet up and start traveling to the city, but on their way there they come across a line of caravans that are being raided by bandits. The caravan's guards seem to be holding their own for now but another wave of bandits are heading towards the caravan. But then the bandits notice the PCs and decide to attack them instead.
By the time that the PCs finish off the bandits, the guards have managed to slay the first wave of bandits. One of the fighters, a dwarf in chainmail, leans his axe against one of the wagons, and walks over. "Greetins, travelers. My name is Ivan Bouldershoulder, and you just saved my caravan."

<If it didn't die the first time, you didn't kill it hard enough> and <If percussion maintenance isn't working, you didn't hit it hard enough>
Why not have the leader of the caravan a powerful merchant and he recommends they befriend other merchants to gain influence sending the party on a goose hunt
I think Morekag idea is a good one but a little bit more detailed:
- Ivan is Leader of the Merchant- City Ewilos ( or a different name ), a small but powerfull City-State with a lot of power and wealth. He is not known outside very well ,only his true name.
- Ivan is his undercover name when he is travelling from A to B. He is more like the " i do what i can do myself" kind of merchant and not too prim and proper ,if he doesn´t need to.
-They will later meet him in one of the big meetings for the next heir of the crown and there he is entering with another type of garment and with his title.
-He will provide the party with some background information.
-He can help a little bit out but not too much ,to avoid any conflict with a big house
He could be escorting someone who favors a different candidate than the party. He could be an influential merchant who might be willing to get the rest of the merchant guild to support the party’s claimant, but they’ll owe a few favors. he could be a long shot candidate himself, sent by the dwarven kingdom to revive an ancient treaty in this time of disarray. He could be going with the intention of setting up shop in the city, and will give his good friends discounts, and let them in on gossip he hears. He’s secretly there to investigate on behalf of the queen who believes her husband was murdered by one of her children.
Some of those can actually work together, now that I look at it
Bonus idea if you didn’t think of it already, have the PCs want different people to win. Or maybe have 2 factions or something so they need to decide which one is best (or least bad) all around. And maybe that person is neither of the ones they were sent there to support.

What is the caravan carrying? Here are some options:

I don’t understand the problem. It seems like you already have it tied in.
