My players are in a big city inbthe desert, they have had some issues with a slaver group and now are in danger of confrontation. One of my players wants more combat in the sessions, so how do I put more combat in the session without it feeling out of place?
Seems like the obvious thing would be to have that slaver group attack.
Betond that, city adventures have the classic, go into the sewers and fight something: be it rats, a goblin tribe, a necromancer and his undead minions. Heck, you can do all of them, after the party clear the rats the goblins move in, once the pesky goblins are gone, the necromancer decides it’s a good place to set up shop. Sewers are the gift that keeps on giving.
An abandoned house with a ghost or two “living” there.
A guild war on the streets the PCs get caught in the middle of.
A dragon, or wyvern or something flies in and starts eating people because their normal hunting grounds are overrun by [plot device].
a local farmer from just outside of town has an ankheg (probably spelled wrong) infestation he hires the party to help him with. After the fight, with all their burrowing, the ankhegs turned up some ancient, mystical macguffin.
I'm a huge fan of political unrest, especially when riots break out in the streets, which could even mark a turning point in the campaign. Now they have to figure out how to help people, or figure out how to quell the violence, find the source of unrest, etc.

They can also be sent to investigate a slaver cache just outside of town in a cave. Only the directions are fuzzy. They’re not sure if this is the slaver cave, or some large monster’s lair.

They can get mugged.
They can save somebody from getting mugged.
They can get into a bar fight.
They could have rescued the local crime lords little girl.
The mayor wants them to take out the vicious gang in his city.
