I've been creating rpg related stuff for a long time. I have made up cities, NPCs, class options, spells, anything that comes to mind. I write notes on whatever is closest to me and it has resulted in notebooks everywhere with random things in it. Recently I started DM'ing for a couple groups and I started getting all of my stuff in order. I have created a lot of stuff that I cannot necessarily use in my campaign so I thought I could start sharing stuff with others so that maybe others could get some use from it and I could get feedback as well. One thing I like making most is NPCs. I make fleshed out NPCs with backgrounds, quirks, interests, and usually have some kind of adventure hook that they can be tied to, but I keep them generic in a way so that they can be dropped into just about any campaign. I was wondering if NPCs was something that other DMs would be interested in and if so where would be good places to share them. I use a lot of homebrew content on dndbeyond so I thought this was a good place to start. Let me know what you think.
A few kinds of NPCs I wouldn't mind having drawn like that would be opponents and low-key antagonists that might survive the first encounter with the PCs. Which is pretty rare. Shopkeepers only come to life when there's reason for it... interest in things others aren't, special knowledge or abilities, or are directly tied to the plot.
Sharing favorites would be something in any case. Ones that you could hardly wait to bring to the table or led to some great interactions with PCs. Perhaps some that targeted a particular kind of player to try to raise their interest?
My own favorite was a reenactment of a retired PC who had extreme pride in his absurd strength and had to prove it regularly to comedic effect. If that counts.
I started a campaign in Eberron recently, specifically Sharn and I have yet to read too much about it. There's so much to read so I created a NPC to be my link into Sharn. She's a member of a previously prominent family that was part of the sixty families of Sharn. Her family was ousted by the Boromar family after a secret scandal involving an illicit affair with a changeling that resulted in a secret changeling son. Now she is trying to regain some honor and her familys place among the sixty. One of my players is a Mercenary and the players are gaining fame after defeating agents of the Lord of Blades and she is going to offer to help fund the creation of a small mercenary group in the hopes other families will want to hire the famous adventurers who defeated the evil warforged.
One thing I will say is I dont really make up NPCs with stats. Most of mine are not involved in combat. They are sources of information or lead to adventures or make certain areas more interesting. Though if people would want more NPCs with stats I could do that. There is so many places to generate stats quickly that I never really planned stats much.
