So I've been working on something off and on (mostly off) and wanted to get some input from outside my head.
I'm trying to collect elements that could be thematically tied to a sort of apocalypse for a homebrewed campaign. What I'm specifically looking for are elements that are already in the various 5e published adventure storylines that could be extracted on their own and tied together into the sort of thing that most folks would think of as 'world-ending.'
Some examples:
Blotting out the sun (ID: RotF)
Dragging a city to Hell (BG: DiA)
Dragon Goddess returning from Hell (ToD)
War with Giants (SKT)
Demon Lords rising from the Underdark (OotA)
Summoning a Mad God (PotA)
Birth of a Death God (ToA)
I'm sure there are others. Maybe some hidden in Dungeon of the Mad Mage or Ghosts of Saltmarsh?
Please add to my list!
Also, if you have any ideas on ways in which a sadomasochistic DM could tie these elements (some or all) together to represent the machinations of a truly ridiculous D&D supervillain, I'm all about seeing what you could come up with!
Well, right now I have a homebrew campaign where eons ago the gods incinerated the earth's surface with heavenly fire to kill all the evil, primordial creatures that were threatening humanity (basically a fiery version of the Great Flood). Now, in present day the BBEG wants to use holy artifacts to replicate the process and purge the world of evil. I figure at some point I'll have him do a mini-version and nuke a city the party is familiar with so that they can have an "oh shit!" moment.
Does that help at all? I realize you asked for things that exist in 5e already but for planning an apocalypse the only real limit is your imagination. You can look to various mythologies and science fiction for ideas too.
