Currently my players are using a mageocracy city as their main location. I had the idea to have them play a session in a possible future, like jump 5 years into the future of the city with everything being the best outcome. technological advances, better standards of living, their favorite shop keeper becoming very successful, everyone happy, etc. However there is some underlying threat causing the life of everyone in the city to be great. Sort of like things may be great but at what cost?
At the end of the session(s) the players have to make a choice to return to their proper time with the future being unknown, or let the underlying threat win and the world continue in this future state.
the problem i have is finding something as the threat, something that would make it a difficult decision whether to destroy the threat or not. Something that makes it hard to decide if the seemingly perfect life of everyone is worth the cost the threat is taking. This feels like an amazing idea that just needs a good final touch.
maybe the person ruling the city either has a deal with or is a devil and is slowly taking everyones soul as payment for the city to prosper, however if they kill him the market would crash and it would become the poorest city in the kingdom

so people live happier more successful lives, but those lives are far shorter with some kind of devil feeding off everyone in the city. Once discovered the players have the option to either cut off the devil's connection, returning everything to normal or let the devil continue it's nesting and stay in the current state of the world.
not sure what their equivalent of cowboys would be. definitely need to put a bit more thought into how everything works and functions in the future part
Why am I suddenly thinking Vampires? for the cattle keepers.
Maybe a magic-absorbing kind of vampire that has found a way to super-charge the aetheric resonance (magical technobabble is fun) so they could feed off the excess channeled magic, elevating themself to near- godlike power? Maybe they super-charged the atmosphere with Wild Magic and its chaotic nature can barely be controlled, threatening the city more each day? You feeling any of that?
