Hello everybody, First time poster and fairly new to 5th edition. I've been playing pathfinder for years now and have recently made the jump to DnD. And I thought it'd be fun to share some of the results of my first session. As my first test session with a group of friends (who were all new to 5th edition, one of whom had never played a tabletop RPG before) I decided I would try something a bit unorthodox when it came to starting the game.
At the onset of the first session I had each of the four players pick one of five cards on the table, upon drawing their cards I gave them the option to trade with each other, or trade for the remaining card. Once their decision was made the card they were left with corresponded to a level 1 character sheet I had already crafted for the game. I told them, "The sheet is filled out to the point of "what" your character is, It's your job to tell me "who" the character is." I then went outside for a smoke break/phone call. When I returned the players were exchanging details scribbling away and making the characters their own.
They adventured on a three session campaign, recently wrapping up. After the final session, I asked if they'd like to keep their characters for any future campaigns, to which 3 out of four said they would.
I figured I'd drop this in here, not so much as a end all be all strategy for DMing, but more so an option for adding a new twist to a gaming session. I was very surprised to see how most of my players reacted to adopting a character they hadn't built themselves. Again I don't think this would work for every group but it might be something enjoyable for you to try, and I'm curious to see if any of you have similar ideas. ~Cheers
What I do is have an ordinary deck of 52 cards and have my players "pick a card any card" I normally have Hearts = healer, spades = stealth, clubs = melee/defense, diamonds = spells/high damage. Then, being a amatuar magician, a sometimes force a card on my players if I really want them to try one. It is a very fun method.
