I have a 5 person level 18 party, in a homebrew campaign, I have created that has lasted a year. The bbeg is a Lich I have created, but I feel like he will not be enough of a challenge. They have each grown very powerful, at this point I’m having to home brew everything to stand a chance against them, they have killed 2 gods so far.
I need creative ways to kill high level, armed to the teeth players. Any suggestions are welcome-traps, monsters, curses, etc.
Bonus points if it is horror driven and breaks them mentally.
AAAAAAA WHY HAVE I BEEN RICKROLLED 7 TIMES TODAAAAY

I'm immune to rickrolls. I've been successfully rickrolled about seven times in my life.

Besides the advice of staggering encounters, I always fall back to the following.
The biggest advantage that the players have against a single opponent is that they have more actions than their foe. This can be somewhat mitigated with legendary actions or lair actions but usually the simplest solution is just to make sure that the Big Bad doesn't face the party alone. And why would they? Important people have bodyguards and mooks to do the fighting for them. The Witchking of Agmar had eight buddies and a fell best (not to mention an entire army) to help him out and, until he went one on one against someone it worked out really well. Dartj Vader had a couple of Tie Fighters as backup in A New Hope, etc, etc.
Now I'm not saying that there all of the sudden should be nine liches instead of just one but your Big Bad should at least have some backup. Even if it's nothing more than cannon fodder, the way 5E works means that even cannon fodder can be really useful. Skeleton archers can plink away at the casters. Sure, they might not do a lot of damage but every hit is a concentration check. Other mooks might just block the way or line of sight to the BB causing the players to be unable to reach them. This usually works fine because it gives players a choice. Do they go straight for the big bad or do they clean up the smaller stuff first? It's *their* choice. :)
Make use of the Exhaustion rules, get the characters to use up their spell slots other class specific resources so that by time they meet the lich, they are running low on resources.
Heres a weird idea: make the lich lay a trail throughout a dungeon riddled with traps, the party catching glimpses of him as they follow this trail and are slowly whittled down by the traps, they continue chasing these glimpses and after some time they reach a larger open room with the lich standing on a balcony above them, the lich summons a few minions and leaves an illusion of itself on the balcony, while it continues moving throughout the dungeon, eventually the players defeat them and keep following the lich, leading to a climactic battle at the very end
