Can you guys think of anything else that would be good to add/change from this list?
The big problem with offering stuff on loan to adventurers, other than the adventurers deciding to just steal the stuff rather than pay it off, is the adventurers not paying due to being dead. As such, the people offering the item will either want a method of getting profit even if the PCs die (or a method where they get their not fully paid off goods back), or will want to charge very high interest.
I guess the key elements are the Cost, Enforcement, and Consequence.
Cost could be anything from a higher price to "a favour", depending on the nature of the seller. I guess higher price for this, as it is factory lines.
Enforcement, I love the idea of the annoying bracelet and antimagic field - that strikes me as the best approach for what amounts to a powerful but fairly lawful company. A more sinister company might instead allow the debt to accumulate, thereby gaining an element of control over the players, forcing them to perform debt collection tasks for them. An evil party might relish this, but a good party might not like having to take everything from a poor soul who has almost nothing.
Consequence, being if you persist in not paying your debt. This would probably involve a teleportation into a prison cell to have your stuff repossessed, or be requested to perform a task for the company. Being adventurers, the story would be much better if they are asked to recover some artefacts for the company to try and replicate for their next production line, or something like that. No-one wants to be pushed out of the door with naught but the clothes on their back, that will make a rubbish story!
The easiest enforcement option is cursed items, as unlike Geas you can't just Remove Curse your way around it (it lets you get rid of the item, but there's no way to actually use it without eliminating the curse).
Actually, that gives me an idea, based on old video games where you could buy lives and more recent freemium games: coin-operated magic items.
Don't tell the players the items are cursed. If they don't make payments on time have something happen (not bad could be silly or annoying) Like the +1 sword starts talking out loud of how the fighter sleeps with a teddie bear or such. The only way to remove the curse is to make the payment plus a bit more.
I don’t know imagine being in the BBEG fight but you’re behind on your payments. The company sends people to come into the fight grab your weapons and then walk out. Now the fight continues but your without weapons because you forgot to pay your bill.
