I'm Running Axeholm in doip, and I'm wondering something. If a Small character squeezes through into A2, then could they or could they not open the double doors from the inside in A4, so that they aren't attracting all of the dwarf ghouls?
If this is obviously true or untrue, please don't judge as this is my 2nd time DMing
It would depend on the strength really, since the Small character is going to need a certain amount of strength (and extra height?) to easily operate the portcullis winch.
Maybe an athletic check, since it involves strength? (But is there any real penalty for failure, other than loss of time, that means a skill check is worth doing here.)
Thanks, but I am not talking about the portcullis. I am talking about the double doors in the north of A4. It says that you have to smash it down from the outside, but nothing about opening them from the inside. I was wondering if a character could open it from the inside as that would be much more convenient for my characters.
Also, there is a penalty. All of the dwarf ghouls go into A4 and then you wouldn't see another one. I am trying not to do this with such new players as they don't know as much of what to do.
Do they have the necklace of fireballs from the dragon tomb? If they get into that situation they could use that. And they probably could open the door from the inside it probably is barred from that side.
Since the door is barred from the inside, somebody could sneak inside and remove the bar - again, the bar would require a certain amount of strength to lift off the hooks on the door.

Someone inside room A4 can remove the bar that hold the doors shut
The adventure specifies that a small character can squeeze through the arrow slits with a DC 10 acrobatics check, so no problems there. Not much penalty of failure either, other than a possible comical moment while stuck in an arrow slit if they fail initially.
As to the door, I would let them remove the bar with a moderate strength check, probably DC 10 or so. If they fail that one, it might make noise which could alert the ghouls. At that point they can try again, risking ghouls that could be coming, or quickly get out of there and try another approach. Or whatever other crazy idea players always seem to come up with.
The door is barred shut so if a character managed to get to the inside of the door I would just allow them to remove the bar. I might require a stealth check to do it quietly but probably not a strength check since the character can repeat the check indefinitely without any consequences for failure - if the task is possible they will eventually succeed.
However, the small character will need to squeeze through the arrow slit to try to raise the portcullis first. If they succeed in raising the portcullis then they can squeeze through another arrow slit inside the fortress to get behind the door and remove the bar. Keep in mind though that if they try to go around through other rooms - some of those contain ghouls.

Ok guys tysm! This has really helped!
