It is just me or is the level requirement odd and somewhat difficult to figure out how to assess / apply to a group.
Specifically, this level requirement quote.
The adventure assumes that the characters start at 1st level. If your players are more interested in exploration and social interaction than combat, or if you want to make the characters’ Feywild excursion less dangerous, have them start at 3rd level instead. Advancement is handled the same way regardless.
Okay, but how exactly do I assess this? Ask the group, hey. Do you plan to kill stuff or just talk your way through things? First, I don't think they would know this a head of time, not to mention they probably expect to fight. Asking them a head of time seems like it would open them to asking more questions about why I would be asking them this which would (I feel) lead to a compromise of the story and how the story plays out. (allowing the character to control the story)
If I allowed them to start at level one, then all the sudden combat breaks out. Does this mean they are likely to get wiped? lol. I suppose at that point, I would have to allow for much more creativity and crazy outcomes just to keep them alive? Maybe the best course of action is just to consider it a level 3 module so they don't constantly find themselves in an overpowering combat situation.
Anyhow, thoughts? Or maybe even feedback from those close to this module's development that could provide insight in what they were going for here.

start at level 2. level 1 is too squishy and level 3 means you're already locked into a subclass choice (unless you multiclass), which some people may prefer to save until they know their characters better.
I know this is late, but the way the combat works, they won't get "killed" at level 1, they just get dragged out of the carnival, unless you've done something really weird. Actually the party doesn't really need to fight anything in this adventure for the most part, so if they get slaughtered it's sort of on them.

You just gotta know your players. If you haven't had a session zero, do that.
