In my campaign the way that would work is “wrong” according to Mike Mearls but it’s how I run warlock patrons.
If a warlock stops serving their patron they keep the power, knowledge, and skills that their patron granted and taught them. But their patron won’t teach them anything new or grant them any more powers so they can’t level up as a warlock and they can’t swap out any of their warlock powers/abilities. Plus if they lose something granted to them by their patron such as the Pact of the Tome’s spellbook or the Genie Patron’s Vessel they can’t replace it with a 1 hour ceremony because that item is granted directly by their patron.
Every DM is different though. What you decide to do in your campaign is what counts as long as you keep it consistent so the players know what to expect.
Warlock Patrons can only grant powers. They can't remove them. They aren't casting Eldritch Blast because Asmodeus or whoever is sending them that energy. They're using it because Asmodeus taught them how to do it. But now they can do it and its not dependent on fealty. How you handle the Warlock turning against their patron? Don't let them gain Warlock levels until they find a new patron.
