Hey guys, so I'm creating a Labrynth and I need some input! The idea behind this labrynth is that it was created by a minor god of a far away plane as a sort of world of its own, and it is his ... well almost his playroom. He is the god of puzzles and self growth, and is sortof a neutral god. So I want this place to be somewhere his worshipers come, and he has sortof lost active intrest in it, but if someone enters who is actively against self growth, he sorta bends the labryth against them, with harder puzzles and more encounters. So I was wondering if you guys had any imput, ideas, or "best experiences" with puzzles and labrynth/maze encounters. I have several vague ideas, but I want this to be as vivid and interesting of a "world" as would befit the intent behind this. I want it to be a sort of dungeon crawl, with encounters and rewards, but also puzzles and traps and a few particular things that might stretch my PCs. Due to sensitivities in the group I want to honnor, I can't include spiders, dead children, or sexual violence, but perhaps when they sleep they dream something that tests them? Let me know what you guys think!
Best one I ever ran was using 4th edition Skill Challenge rules. The labyrinth itself is kind of hand-waved away through skill checks so you don't have the tedious descriptions of wandering through the maze. Every couple of checks I'd throw a puzzle or trap at them with different results based on success/failure of the checks in between. To adapt it to 5th and to fit with your self-improvement idea I'd give Inspiration to a particular character if they succeed at a puzzle/trap that tests their Personality/Ideals/Bonds/Flaws and make sure to make a success/failure encounter pair for each character. So for 4 PCs you'd need to come up with 8 encounters -- 4 if they are succeeding on their maze checks, and 4 for failures. For the 1/0 checks I'd have them run the encounter as normal but for 1/1 I'd give advantage on checks for it. I'd recommend Flaws being the self-improvement for 0/0 encounters.
As far as puzzles go, I think I might be able to help you out. I have over 3 Dozen Puzzle ideas for D&D on my YouTube channel, Wally DM. Each video gives full demonstration on how it works and links to download the visual props I use in the videos.
Guys I am so excited. I just bought a puzzle lock! It is a padlock that takes three keys to open! I cant wait to see the looks on their faces when I hand them a key ! Also, thanks for the imput! I need a TON of puzzles. I'm looking at escape room puzzles and so far I like the idea of a code on peices of "stone tablet" I could make with clay I have and popsicle sticks. Also, there was a thing where there was writing backwards that can be read by puting it up to a mirror, or a potion riddle with prop potions. what do you guys think of those?
I've seen a video of that puzzle lock you bought. I know exactly what you are talking about, I think I might get one myself. It looks super cool!
The mirror puzzle is fun, definitely... I recorded videos for two different versions if you wanna take a look. One is a more dangerous one... the other, if you want to Rick Roll your players, lol. Anyway, the visual props/sheet to hand your players is in the description if you want to use them.

I just came across this post and I'm blown away by how good your puzzles are, they aren't so difficult that my players will give up, but they are difficult enough to feel rewarding! Good work! I'm now sub'd as well :D

Oh awesome! Would love to have you as a subscriber. Unfortunately, I do not have PDFs available yet... But. I am currently writing a D&D puzzle book with hopes of running a Kickstarter by the end of the year! :) The book will have approximately 30 puzzles from my channel and 30 puzzles that are new, never been seen before. It is my goal to make the book easy to follow where a DM can simply drop it into their game. I'll be doing another YouTube video update soon with regards to my progress. Hope to see you there! :)

I just came across this post in preparation for my game next week and ended up purchasing the PDF. I’m only three puzzles in and I want to use all of them! Just wanted to thank you and let you know that five years later this post (and the book) is still extremely helpful.
Hey Wallydw, is the book out yet? I would love to read it, it sounds awesome!
