I have a party of 5 lvl 5. I want them to encounter a stone giant in a deep forest. It is there, terrorizing travellers, because it was driven out of its home in the mountains a couple of miles south-west.
Now what is strong enough to frighten a stone giant, but weak enough for a party of 5 maybe lvl 6 to kill it?
A young white dragon is too small to frighten a stone giant, an adult dragon is way too strong for them. Any ideas?
In likelihood, it was driven out of its home by its own kin, because it was both bad scouting and at art (The only important things in Forgotten realms style stone giant society)
Alternatively, as described in the stone giant dream walkers description, it went to the surface because it felt like it, and realized the surface is utterly terrifying.
If you just want them to fight something, I would in the 8-10 Cr area. So an abominable yeti, a big xorn, a bone devil, and more.
Kicking some one out of a cave seems very dragon like. A young dragon would be able to kick out a giant, it might not even be an evil dragon.
Another cool monster would be an eidolon. Given stone giants are known for many stone carvings it seems possible they could get haunted by a ghost who takes control of statues.
Some kobold, goblin or similar cave dwellers tunnel in
fey, like any fey. They like to mess with people including giants, it could be a swarm of pixie, some quickling or pick any humanoid like a illusionist and change its creature type to fey
I'd go for something which the giant shouldn't be scared of. I'd also have the giant ask the party to kill the monster but save his pet - but neglect to mention which is which.
Alternatively the giant could neglect to mantion his pets and the party might go in and kill off 2 green dragon wyrmlings (give them obvious features like collars to indicate they are owned) and then kill off some kobolds (who were trying to free the dragons) and the Giant only wanted the Kobolds killed to save his dragons.
Swarm of insects "stone weevils" they're so small their practically invisible to the stone giant he/she just knows they are being eaten alive by them at home... obviously highly resistant to bludgeoning damage and lets say they have some sort of hive queen warrior worker drone type structure that way the hero's basically just have to deal with the queen and any "royal" progeny to deal with the infestation

Your comment gave me a really nice idea. Of course it could have been a young white dragon, but why not some Swarm of Rot Grubs ? My players are fairly new to the game and it's gonna give them an idea of the kind of ****ed up shit you can find in DnD. A Firbolg druid is gonna warn them of them so they don't run into it completely obliviously

Stone giants getting kick out of society has a whole lore with the Dreamwalkers.
One guy mentioned it by his lore is off, I suggest you just look at Volo's for the background.

Giant fleas carrying disease and pestilence would be a good reason.
