Normally, I’d suggest not fudging rolls at all. It undercuts player decisions and the luck of the game.
However, if you aren’t experienced, or are testing out a new homebrew creature that you aren’t sure about, consider using a “karma” system instead of fudging rolls. If you fudge a roll to make sure that an encounter isn’t completely a cakewalk/unfair tpk, keep track of what you fudge, and fudge in the other way later. If you make sure a creature lands a hit when it wouldn’t, make another creature miss a hit later on. This way, it’s still fair to the players, but it distributes the luck better.
