You could just need the damage type to be "present" without actually needing to smash the glass with it, i.e. dripping poison onto the case (or onto a rune etched on the plinth?) would cause it to open, without needing to do X poison damage to it. That would also solve the question of who's coming along afterward and replacing all the smashed glass
