SquigsTheTruth, i like your example, but the whole point of DMing is to create a story/world. If the characters decide what happens, and they know the rules well, you dont need a DM. You can just make a story and play it, without having someone to dictate the game. The point of being a DM isnt to be a reff, but to invent things to advance the story or just making the game interesting, depending on your play style. If you let the players decide what happens, it ruins the fun, for the DM and the players. You cant have dnd without a DM providing information. I.E., instead of player one saying, "a note falls out of the dead guys pocket," the DM would have the note fall out of the pocket.
