I’d like to build and launch a dragonlance open world campaign. I don’t want to follow the story of the heroes of the lance or any of its heroes. Just want to use the setting for an open world of level one starting adventurers. Ok, so that’s what I’m after. Obviously I need the phb dms guide and monster compendium. But here’s where it gets tricky…I have the shadow of dragon queen book. I will get Tasha’s cauldron of everything and Xanathar guide (also looking at tasslehoffs pouches of everything I know it’s not dnd official)
I’m trying to organize the races of krynn and classes that can be used. And it’s quite a bit to tackle. I’m a little overwhelmed by the amount of content to compile. I love dragonlance and I love dnd and I’d love to bring them together. Any thoughts or helpful hints?
As far as the resources you're planning on acquiring, I'd prioritize Xanathar's Guide to Everything over Tasha's. I think XGtE has more to offer a game than Tasha's, unless you really want Tinker Gnomes to be Artificers, which my gut says no to.
I wouldn't worry about Tasslehoffs Pouches of Everything being "not official". It's your game and nothing should discourage you from making up or acquiring resources to aid you as you run the game you want to run. If you want to set your game in Krynn, the folks behind Tasslehoff's Pouches maintain the Dragonlance Nexus, who are one of if not the most high quality Dragonlance fan communities out there, they're certainly prolific in their wiki and DMsGuild content. It appears Tasslehoff's Pouches is much more encyclopedic a setting book than Shadow of the Dragonqueen, and there will be discrepencies between the two. Draconian stat blocks are different between the works, and I imagine both handle the Knights of Solamnia and Mages of High Sorcery differently. I don't see that as a problem, you get to pick and choose, though I do like how Shadow of the Dragonqueen introduces backgrounds with feats into the game, and sort of a advanced or prerequisite feat system. Also realize that you while you could get Shadow of the Dragonqueen in entirety or piecemeal here on DDB, you'll have to homebrew Tasslehoffs pouches if DDB is integral to your game. Plenty of folks can help you on that in the home-brew subforum though.
I may be overlooking it, but I don't believe folks playing in Krynn set games show up on this board a lot. To that end, I'd put out a similar feeler asking how to make a Krynn campaign work in the Dragonlance Nexus. I know some long time fans of the Dragonlance setting weren't happy with the WotC book, or rather disappointed. There's a variety reasons as to why, but knowing the Shadow of the Dragon Queen, if you really want to run a game that's more to your memory of the novels, etc. the DL Nexus crowd is probably worth visiting.

thats some great info thanks for the lengthy reply i really appreciate it! I did manage to use anyflip to sort through tas's pouches. its far more comprehensive than shadow of the dragon queen which i pre-ordered and got a while ago. (i was def. somewhat disapointed myself) Thanks for the tip on Tasha vs Xanathar. This all helps me narrow down some stuff :) Yes, I would have to do some homebrewing on dndbeyond for kender/minotaur races and then figure out the knights of solamnia or wizards book. or maybe the answer will be in the books themselves as i read over the stuff in phb and xanathar and tas's pouches. you made my day my man! cheers
