so my first session started with these words "you have recived a letter from a friend telling you to meet him in neverwinter as has important information for you .." Along ghe way w saved an inn from rats but as we explored we encountered a scarred half ling hidding in the privvy(i imagine crapping him self) player streight away says "i stab the halfling" long story short it's sucessfull and a main npc is angry about it
I want the friend to be revieled to be the dead halfling how should i go about this as a retcon/expanded story telling? I want said player to think oh crap what now? For the npc(who at this point is gunna now be the BBEG) to somehow say ah but i know of this secret and it would bring you huge wealth
The idea is the players rouge wants power and more so riches
So, if I understand this correctly, the "friend who sent the letter" was heading to meet the PC, and was killed by him, and now yo want to make him into a BBEG seeking vengeance.
Some ideas.
proceed with the trip to Neverwinter. Along the way you encounter a Priest or Cleric who is telling the story (to someone other than the PC) that they encountered a poor hapless person (n mention of race) murdered in the woods at some recently cleared Inn and was blessedly able to bring them back to life.
A while later, at another stop, they overhear the tale of a Cleric of the God of vengeance who restored life to some halfling.
It is now obvious that the player has no idea who they are meeting -- so this friend is really a friend of a friend. WHich means the person they were introduced by is on the kill list. So have them see in the distance at a different stop, a halfling who is angry. Don't allow a confrontation -- just an encounter and the halfling pretends like they have bo clue who the PC is.
All of this should happen on the way to Neverwinter.
At neverwinter, they should meet the friend they were heading to meet, who will tell them that there was a halfling who wanted to offer them some very lucrative job, and had gone down to meet them, but hadn't returned just yet.
While waiting for a couple days, the "old friend" will be murdered, and a note will be left that says "you killed me. Prepare to die.".
