Yes, I starting a new campaign. A player is playing an Air Genasi whose human mom was raped by a djinni when she accidentally released him. He has set off to the world to find this djinni. What are some good ideas to do to 'play' with him on his way? Can djinni possess people?
Wow... ok... Djinni are Chaotic Good by nature so that backstory is certainly something. No they can not possess people. You should at least check out their stat block in the Monster Manual.
What I would do is make the actual "culprit" an Efreet who modified his mom's memory after a consensual relationship with the Djinn. It's now sent this character after the djinn because elementals hate each other and it wants to see the djinn die at the hands of his son. Have a series of atrocities blamed on the djinn that are the efreet's doing. Things like NPCs telling him a great wind hit during a celebration and the bonfire spread to burn down the village. Always something to do with a fire that went out of control because of a great wind. If you want to add a Dao in to then you can add things like a wind knocked over the tower but with close inspection the ground had been weakened.
Or you can have the djinn be the victim of a wizard/fiend/(whatever you want to be the BBEG) who tricked it into putting on a Ring of Alignment Reversal, turning it into a Chaotic Evil entity until the ring is removed. Then the player will probably kill the djinn before finding out the truth.
Thank you. I do like the Efreeti idea. But the character is an Air Genasi, so that will not explain him being AIR genasi. But, I will just have the djinni act as if he went mad for being locked away so long.

I'd reread Rathkryn's suggestion - the idea was that the Djinn was framed by the Efreeti, not that the characters father was the Eftreeti!
The concept being that the Efreeti modified the mothers memory to engineer the situation where the character hunts down the Djinn. This allows for a reveal at the end, rather than just a fight - possibly allowing them to gain some perks for keeping a djinn dad alive!
Or it could be that the djinni was under the control of some powerful wizard who forced it to take actions that it would not have otherwise done. Finding dad could be part of the quest, finding out what happened another part, then going after said wizard a third part...
I don't think it's an issue to have an air djinn having done a bad thing regardless of their typical alignment. I would advise you don't have characters do things like sexual assault but it seems like that ship has sailed. An air Djinn could easily be " chaotic good" but just be an arse hole that always pursues pleasure and assumes everyone else enjoys it too.
As for possession. the djinni does not have a posses action like a ghost but generally speaking they are associated with magic so could have that ability. It can also easily be air themes with them transforming into a gas that fills a living creatures lungs.
As an air djinn you generally want wind related effects. Voices on the wind, weather effects and gusts of wind. As a chaotic trickster you may also want things like shape shifting and illusions. None of these things are really on the djinn stat block but thats not really an issue.
Actually what I have going is a rescue mission of a young lady. She has been cursed though and no one knows it. But when she gets outside a town, 30-40% of the town will die. I will tie the djinni to these curses to to make them think it is the Djinni but really it will be the girl. Like the survivors will all say things like, 'Yeah right after that gust of wind, my husband just fell over. This should give them another option. Perfect. excellent ideas guys thanks
