I have writers block and my players will search google 1st.
This is a mid dungeon room set after a near deadly encounter. No escape as the way back has collapsed during battle. Likely be a timer walls close in or fill with water. There is an arch with script that reads….
once they say the answer the arch opens into a doorway.
First off, if your players search Google for the answer to riddles, you have a much bigger problem than writer’s block. That is really problematic behaviour and you need to have a conversation with your players about that. The DM-player relationship necessitates mutual trust, and it is clear there are trust issues here.
Presuming your players are bad at riddles, and that is why they Google them, here’s some easy options I wrote for a group who likes, but generally isn’t great at, riddles:
Fire she fears me,
When I draw near she,
But she wins our war,
When under a floor.
Water
What’s feared by the fearless?
Stronger than god?
Friend to the friendless?
And moves an immovable rod?
Nothing (this gives you a potential double challenge given your parameters - instead of saying the answer, they have to keep silent for a long period of time)
Q: What can you hold in your right hand, but never in your left hand?
A: Your left hand.
Q: What gets broken without being held?
A: A promise.
Q: Poor people have it. Rich people need it. If you eat it you die. What is it?
A: Nothing.
Q: It belongs to you, but your friends use it more. What is it?
A: Your name.

I'm curious as to what happens if they fail the riddle!
1: What word has four letters, but means the same thing with three of them removed?
2: What word has 3 E's but only one letter in it?
3: I can't be burnt but once lit I'm gone
4: What can't be cut with a knife Can't be forged by a smith but can be broken with a word?
5: I can bite but have no teeth I can hide what's underneath I can herald death, or fun, And quail under the morning sun.
Answers:
Answer: Five. Remove F,I,E and it leaves V, which is the numeral for 5.
Answer: Envelope
Answer: Darkness
Answer: Silence. (for added panic, make the riddle require the room be silent. This can be either with a Silence spell, or by allowing it to finish filling with water, and remaining silent once it does.)
1. Sometimes blue, Sometimes red, I'm always with you, And often shed.
2. Giver of life, Bringer of death, You can't escape me, With your dying breath.
3. The bigger they are, The harder they fall, To test your strength, Punch this brick wall.
1. Blood, maybe require a player to cut themselves and shed some blood to open the door.
2. Time, maybe only open the door after the characters take a short rest.
3. Open the door when the player with the lowest strength score punches the wall. If anyone else punches the wall, they take damage that is equal to however much strength they have above the lowest. Ex. Bard has 8 strength (lowest), barbarian with 17 strength punches the wall, and barbarian takes 9 force damage.
What if rather than a riddle where the answer opens the door, the riddle relates to something in the room that the players have to interact with? That way they are stopping the mechanism that is making the wall move or the water come in.
I have oceans without water,
Mountains without land,
Cities without people,
And deserts without sand.
What am I
A- a map
so maybe there’s a button somewhere on a map on the wall? Perhaps the location the players are in the world is the location on the map the players need to press?

I really like this idea and I think it fits easily into what my players can do,
if the water gets too high ill have them roll to spot the map on the wall that has the hidden button.
Thank you so much.
All the riddles were very good and I will like use them all =) Game is in 5 min tonight. So happy y’all came to help me out.
