Well, I have this idea, but as I start planning the overall project I am wondering if it is a bit ambitious, or if I should say "f-it" and push on. The idea.....a new adventure that would go level 1-20. Starts in Waterdeep with a task from the Lord of Waterdeep investigating a shipwreck, leading to the characters heading out on a mighty sea voyage to an unknown land and society bent on conquest, with lots of adventuring in between, and no guarantee that the characters would be able to ever make it back to Faerun whether they live or not. Would set up some content before sailing away to level up some, but would need quite a bit of filler so it's not just "You set sail, 6 months later you arrive in a new land." There will be plenty of exploration of other lands, swashbuckling adventures, etc. before arriving at the destination, then a whole long-term culminating adventure once there.
So....should I scrap the idea altogether, or push on?
That's up to you. You should do it if you want to do it. You should not do it for the money or the fame of hundreds of people using your adventure. You should make your decision based on how you would feel if after you finished it no one other than you ever reads it. If you would still be happy with that outcome then you should do it, if not then don't.
My advice is not to decide beforehand it will go 1-20. Just start and keep going until the story reaches its natural end. Sustaining a coherent story across 20 levels can get really challenging. And filler is generally the enemy — players can lose focus and the story gets muddy and unclear. Maybe it’s only been a couple days in game, but a month or more irl, it can be hard for the players to re-find the thread after the side quest. I’d say try and keep it tightly focused and just have it wrap up when it wants to.
