One such rod has led a mated pair of fire giants named Okssort and Ildmane to Triboar. Their entourage includes five orogs, six orcs mounted on axe beaks, and twelve magmins split into two gangs of six.
This is a pretty massive attack. Granted, my players (4) will have an npc each to control, but this is still a large force to contend with all at once. Any tips on strategy or how to run this? Should I just have the full army jump onto the map at once? Separate them into two groups? Do half first, and then the other half come in as 'reinforcements'?
I want this to be very challenging, but not certainly not impossible. And Kobold Fight Club had one Fire Giant as easy, but just adding one more (not to mention all the rest here) already bumps it up to deadly.
The town is far larger than the typical battlefield for most games, I'd have them spread out a bit and give the players the choice of what they actually want to fight. If one group starts taking casualties, others may start heading that way, but they should be hundreds of feet away so it will take multiple turns for any reinforcements. Also, if either of the fire giants gets down to half life, all of the remaining enemies will flee.
My DM just did this encounter, the NPCs were garbage to help us out but we met them head on, staggered our ranged and melee, and it was a bloody brutal 4 hour battle but we killed them and the fire giants. The DM was impressed.
I didn't even include the magmins in the main battle. They were just roaming throughout the town causing chaos, setting fires, etc. And the fire giants spent most of their rounds digging for the rod, so they were mostly a non factor. Doing it this way really helped my group manage the battle.
