The Myconid Spore servant template in the monster manual has so much potential, such as: a Young Red Dragon Spore Servant! What other interesting spore servants can you think of, to add a little flavor to the fungus infested tunnels of the underdark
Based on some other discussions/suggestions around my current campaign, I'm thinking "the beast in the bottom of the mine" will be twist on the Myconid creatures.
I'm thinking it may be some demonic creature - like a Yochlol - which consumed, and melded with, a Myconid Sovereign - giving it the ability to use Animating Spores.
I'll have to play around with the design, and balance, but I'd like to merge the Myconid Sovereign with some demonic creature - even if it's not a Yochlol. The idea is that there wouldn't be any Myconid Adults, but the Yochlol would be able to re-animate the corpses of the mine as Myconid Spore Servants.
The Dwarves that built and inhabited the complex, and then were slain by the creature ( after they broke into the Underdark with their mining ) would be some. The last adventuring party to breach the mines would be others.
I think the "feel" and visuals I'd be going for with this demonic/Myconid fusion would be like what the protomolecule did to Eros Station in The Expanse, with demonically infected Spore Servants being akin to the Protomolecule Hybrids.
I agree, it's a really interesting monster concept, since it's really a "monster toolkit" which allows you to build new monsters easily.
