I have tried a few and I'm after one that lasts and can be drawn on. Gave up for a while and tried a large fabric one, not ideal when have drinks etc at the table
I mostly do theater of the mind, so my battle maps tend to be ad hoc and I value portability. So I usually use the small pathfinder flip-maps, just for quick sketches.
I find that plain large sheet of paper works best for me - but I use abstract maps, and theater of the mind, as opposed to miniatures and highly tactical combat ( purely a style choice; both approaches are good ).
I've experimented with laying a wall mount whiteboard on the table - that worked well, just a bit awkward and clunky. If I was doing grids and miniatures, then I'd want to find a pre-gridded (or dotted) version of one of these.
If I had a large sheet of table top safety glass ( rounded edges and corners ), I'd lay that one the table. That would allow me to put all kinds of underlay grids and graphics on paper under the glass, and allow me to write with dry erase on the glass and wipe it clean.
It would be reusable, durable, flexible ( and you could spill drinks on it safely ), but it's not super portable, if that's a consideration for you.

There are very light versions of what you want available, moreover they are not terribly large so that they can be used on the average dining room table (without leaves) and can sit on top of an ungridded map. I have one I bought from Arcknight I use in Savage Worlds games all the time.

I also use alot of theater of the mind most of the time. I do use maps for reference at times and will also draw/paint up a battle map in photoshop or gimp now and then. Still though, Mostly used simply for reference.

I tried Gimp. Had no idea what I was doing and was too lazy to learn😁

Seen those, they don't seem very big but might try them 👍
That is actually a really good idea
Thanks, I will check that out
