I dismantled three ring bingers and used the panels duct tape together. D&D never felt that necessary but for some of the really crunch games* out there, yeah charts and tables as a sort of heads up display were important more than a notes and dice shield.
*I had one for Leading Edge's Aliens Adventure game which was basically Phoenix Command watered down slightly. The screen was basically an idex as to where to go in the rule book to resolve various aspects of combat.
