So I recently gave one of my warforged player characters a docent as a reward. my question is how do I make the docent add languages and abilities from the base item when they attune you it?
Docents are essentially NPCs controlled by the DM. Easiest way to track the languages is to have them written down in the same place you track your campaign NPCs. If you want, you could always homebrew a specific docent to add to the player's character sheet so that you both can track it's abilities.
I would expect the DM to give the docent the languages of the dominant species that lived in the area, however, the docent may have a single "exotic" language associated with their specialty. Docents are often researchers or history buffs so they would often have a research interest. They may have a special language from that pursuit.
As far as abilities, they should have abilities consistent with those pursuits too. They may be excellent cartographers, calligraphers, climbers, historians or any of a number of things you would imagine a researcher to be able to do. I'd limit their abilities to only two or three, consistent with a single research topic, and not something they might pursue as a profession otherwise. For example, I wouldn't give them the ability to be a blacksmith because they were a weapons expert. In that case I would not have classified them as a docent but as a weapons smith.
I understand how they work. what I needed was help with making the abilities show up on a character sheet. I wanted it to be easy case the character “loses” the docent.
How exactly do you want it to show up? When you add the docent to a character's inventory, you can click on it and access a "notes" section for the docent. You can easily add the additional languages there as well as specify which spell you rolled for it to get.
So some of my players are fairly new and if things are hard to find they tend to forget they have them.
By having the languages auto populate on the language section of the character section they see it easier. Same for the spell and basic abilities.
I would link the item here but I don’t see a share link on the item.
Docent of the Wild Woods
By creating the item all the bonus’ are added to the sections on their character sheet so they wont forget. Well, at least, it is a little easier for them to remember that its there.
Docents do not give the character any bonuses or languages. It has bonuses for it's own rolls, and is a translator for languages. Also, it's not always available. If the PC and the docent are on bad terms, it might not help them at all.

sounds like a custom item to be made.
