I have my players in a city where their employer resides. They have been given housing here and have met a few npcs. Two days ago they took up a job watching a store for a shopkeeper. Their currently fighting a clan of dragonborn slavers who kidnapped two of their friends (1 NPC companion, 1 player) I want to know what I should do to get the players attached to the city?
player will mostly get attached to a city if they're made a part of it. maybe have them get attached to NPC's, make friends and make connections that they'll often need help or guidance from or be recognized by some authority and praised and people of the city would recognize them as saviors (though don't overdo it or it'll go to the PC's heads) you could also have someone give them an offer to join a guild or club of some sort in the city.
Yeah, NPC's are the key to forming an attachment. Interesting characters that they want to keep interacting with.
A secondary point (if you're confident that you have the first covered) is locations. Having a well thought out city with cool locale's like a seedy bar they may favour, or a brothel, or a place with a "guy who knows how to get things". It's fun to have physical touches if you play in person, like a map of their house, or the city. Maybe the purchase deeds, a contract with their employer. This isn't for everyone, some people find this to be just clutter in their playing pack, but for some, it's amazing.
