Hey all. First time DM here. I am planning on running MOoT for my first campaign, and I get that we are supposed to "fill in the blanks" to some extent in order to fill out the campaign and keep things interesting.. HOWEVER I tend to be lacking when it comes to the inspiration segment of DM'ing. This leads on to my question..
For those that have seen the MOoT book, there is no random encounters table. I am looking at creating my own RE table but any ideas that you have to make it more interesting would be great.
Also the Temple of Mystery map looks really interesting, however it does not give any explanations or descriptions of the puzzles within, and I have no idea where to start in terms of coming up with my own puzzles/traps based around those on the map. Again any help would be ideal.
Definitely look at the starter adventure in that book in order to brainstorm for ideas. It really does set up a lot for you to do, and has a couple of "random" encounters for you to use. Branching from this, checking the bestiary is an amazing way of finding inspiration for encounter ideas. Personally, no matter what I'm running, I just sit down, watch some "relevant" source material, and just write down any fun things I see or think about. Try watching 300, reading the Percy Jackson novels, or something along those lines. Get into the head-space of a fantasy Greek-like mythology filled world. "Trinkets of Theros" on the DM Guild site is also apparently pretty good for ideas with all of their trinket descriptions. And it's only $1! Hope this helped!
(the minotaur from the pre-written starter adventure is a hilarious example)
