Ambiance : Maya / Horror / Caves bellow ancient ruins / shadowfell / obscur jungle So...yesterday my player’s was stuck between a portal of the shadowfell and a shadow dragon... being beat between the hammer and the anvil...somehow they survive and seal the portal. To heal the barbarian of the group, the mage throw a homebrew spell that transfer life energy from a foes to a friend. Since the spell does psychic damage, the mage kill a banshee and transfer all the remaining life to the barbarian and so I say « the spirit of the banshee is now within you » .
Do you guys have any cool idea how this could evolve? Have handle any situation like this one before!
Banshees are the undead remnants of elves who, blessed with great beauty, failed to use their gift to bring joy to the world. Instead, they used their beauty to corrupt and control others. Elves afflicted by the banshee's curse experience no gladness, feeling only distress in the presence of the living. As the curse takes its toll, their minds and bodies decay, until death completes their transformation into undead monsters.
Sorrow Bound.
A banshee becomes forever bound to the place of its demise, unable to venture more than five miles from there. It is forced to relive every moment of its life with perfect recall, yet always refuses to accept responsibility for its doom.
Beauty Hoarders.
The vanity that inspired the banshee's cursed creation persists in undeath. These creatures covet beautiful objects: fine jewelery, paintings, statues, and other objects of art. At the same time, a banshee abhors any mirrored surface, for it can't bear to see the horror of its own existence. A single glimpse of itself is enough to send a banshee into a rage.
If they are elvish, I might consider starting Divine Wrath on them. If not, just have them feel no gladness.
Definitely give them dreams of being a beautiful elf that abuses their beauty. (Sorrow bound)
And totally make them Beauty Hoarders - including looking at mirrors send the Barbarian directly into Rage.
I think you also have to decide if the player can go more then 5 miles from where they are. I’d say yes, because then maybe it’s greatful that it can travel now and decides to work with the character. And you’re going to need to come up with a way to let them remove it. And if it stays, you should give it a personality. I like where mog is going with drawbacks, but maybe also give them a positive. Like one of the banshee special attacks 1/long rest, like horrifying visage or incorporeal movement. Make it have a plus and a minus, so they might consider not removing it.
Wow I like this community!! Very creative and consequent to the dnd lore!! I like the barbarian seing the banshee in the mirror and being rage, the depressed state and nightmare giving key info over the real life of the banshee .
I will also give him horrifying visage once per day. And let room for the Player to see if he want to embraces the new dark sides within him and have more banshee attribute or try to find a way to exorcise the spirit.

Xalthu is right about an advantage. Incorporeal movement does not really work now that that it has a body.
I would either go with Horrifying Visage, or give them immunity to being charmed and/or frightened because of dual nature of their existence now.

Great story about to come :)
