This is 100% the route to take. You can't redo the entire encounter whenever you think your players are going to get testy with you if the fight doesn't go their way. That being said, it sounds like maybe you did switch that one a little harsh on them, I can understand some frustrations from them. I'd just admit to them in advance of the next session that you know you made a slight slip up, and it will be rectified and they will enjoy what comes from it. Then give them some loot and XP, and boom, they'll all move on happy.
