Hi all! I started a new campaign yesterday and one of the players requested a cursed Tankard of Sobriety as his allotted magic item. His character, a barbarian, is a non-drinker who, after being exiled and dishonored. is trying to build up his tolerance in order to regain said honor in the eyes of his clan, whose honor system is based around drinking and fighting.
He chose this item for purely roleplaying purposes and I want to help him have as much fun as possible with it.
I am making up a kind of wild magic style table for anytime he drinks an alcoholic beverage from the Tankard, but am at a loss as to what could potentially happen other than status/conditions, or temporary boosts/debuffs of ability scores.
Any creative or funny or useful/detrimental effects would be greatly appreciated!
if it is for roleplaying I'd say don't give him that many buyffs or debuffs. If the beverage is colored, make his skin or hair turn the same color as it, without any buffs or debuffs if the beverage iis original from a real world location make him have some steretypical manners, like if he's drinking wine make him grow a mustache and try to imitate a french accent, if it's whiky make him speak on a scottish accent
Last one is proabably a terrible idea, but definitely go with the color.changing stuff
I’d also stay away from buffs or debuffs, too much of a pain to track them. It could spawn a different drink every time he uses it. And I don’t just mean beer, wine, whiskey, I mean cocktails, a very dry martini, a negroni, a gin and tonic. You could get a cocktail recipe book, roll randomly, open to the page number and say it makes whatever is on that page. And if you really want to get into the bookkeeping, have him make a con save to see if he likes it, but track which ones he had (maybe write it into the book). Then if that drink comes up in his tribal rituals, he gets advantage to reflect his experience/tolerance.
