In my campaign, the players don't want it to end. So they are now L17, and Strahd has evolved, despite several apparent "defeats" - he is basically inhaling the dark powers that the players have banished form the Amber Temple. One of the players, previously a warlock with a dark power as a patron, was slain by the party and has now been resurrected as a container for the Morning Lord as part of the latter's tenuous steps to restore the light to Barovia.
In essence, the game is upped to the point where gods and their minions are taking a more direct involvement.
Did you know Arabelle is actually a sliver dragon? You do now.
Oh and Mordenkainen is still a selfish S.O.B. Just sayin'.
