Since it was Halloween last weekend and my group has been doing a combined campaign of LMOP & Icespire, they were at Gnomengarde and I decided to “Halloween” it up. The usual weird but cheery wild magic was replaced by spooky things such as a group of bats appear, feeling of bugs crawling over PC’s, poltergeist-like occurrences, etc. I rationalized it by the wild magic being affected by the gnomes’ dispositions.
Not being used to scared feelings and being hunted, the gnomes were all paranoid and creepy. The kitchen was operating as normally despite no one eating in the mess hall. The food was in a pile, rotting. Kitchen staff all talked in a sing-song voice. The crazy old tinkerer with the ballistas was distracted by mage hand at the controls then knocked out.
it was a large group with level 3&4 players, so instead of a regular mimic I had a giant spitting mimic instead. Group LOVED it! The barrel room is small, so I adapted the spitting mimic a little to do a cone of acid spray instead. Put the fear of DM into the PC’s really quick. (Casters were all bunched up next to each other and were forced to spread out- no touch buffs!). Still, the party actually worked as a group to strategize, and brought down the mimic despite some crappy rolls. One PC death, but luckily for the group one of the gnome guards was on patrol to hear the commotion, saw the battle, and used the revivify scroll from the gnome first aid kit.
The mad king was about to immolate himself and his partner but was stopped by a clever wild-shaped Druid. While the mad king regained his sanity and talked to Fiddle & dwiddle (or whatever their names are), the partner king was a bundle of nerves. The Druid gave him a love potion to calm his nerves as a tonic, and while he was charmed, convinced him to open the treasury vault for looting. Druid and Rogue cleaned out Gnomengarde and headed out. Rest of the party followed moments later, leaving a confused Mad King with a suddenly straight partner, an empty treasury, and a giant puddle of mimic goo.
Anyhoo... it made for a memorable Halloween adventure in the most unlikely place. The group was expecting an episode of Smurfs and got Oompa Loompas from hell instead.
