I usually allow players who have never played before to change class once at or before level 5, if they want to. Class is the only thing I allow them to change. Species and ability scores stay, and I try to have a good amount role play dedicated to the change. Example: in a campaign that I am currently DMing two players who had never played before both picked barbarian at the start, the party just hit level 4 and both of them decided they did not like barbarians, we basically played out them coming to terms with their primal rage and embracing new paths. One went with warlock and the other Paladin, both were easy enough to roll over, although their ability scores are not completely optimized for the new builds.
Depending on what your Warlock player wants the new class to be it could easily be a quest, or story arch.
Switching from Warlock to Cleric or Paladin is super easy in terms of narrative. The warlock seeks redemption from some “good/lawful” deity, and is commanded to kill/defeat/imprison their warlock patron, the redeeming deity cleanses them of the dark warlock magic and grants them new powers to defeat the “evil” warlock patron (this actually sounds like it would be a lot of fun to play out for the DM and party also).
Switching from Warlock to Wizard also fairly simple….. The PC realizes that the power they wielded is actually from their own mind, and their Warlock Patron has been using and manipulating them for their abilities and has actually not given them any abilities (same story can be used for sorcerer).
Switching from a caster to a none caster could be a simple as they lost their power or the Warlock Patron took their power away.
I guess the point I’m trying to make is that it is very easy to come up with good ways to switch classes without changing the PCs back-story, or what they have done in the campaign so far.
Also, the idea that someone suggested 2 years is a long campaign and maybe just shut it down is….absurd. All of the campaigns I am currently DMing and the one that I am playing in have all been going well over 2 years.
I would absolutely do it in a heartbeat. It's a fey pact/deal/trick. There is nothing in a campaign that's so precious it can't withstand a player playing the character they like. The only thing I would enforce is that they have to actually change in game so all the characters remember that it happened. Changes like this aren't a big deal.
