I have a Norse inspired campaign setting and I just use google translate. For example I have a redcap named blóðkóngur, which is literally just "Blood King" in Norwegian.
Well, maybe Norse, but not Norwegian.
I can't find actual Old Norse on google translate, so I use modern languages from the region.
Weird, becuase in modern Norwegian it would be "blodkonge".
It could have been Swedish, Icelandic, or me translating it through Icelandic then Norwegian. I don't remember.

Well, neither of those are Norwegian. It could work in Icelandic.
Honestly, most writers just look up baby name lists for characters all the time. Any random generator will do it too. I honestly think that any name is good if you can SAY IT OUT LOUD. No pounding the keyboard!
But sometimes you gotta come up to names so strange that it'll make any player pay attention to that NPC.
I'm not even sure any of these names should be said out loud, but there you go. Or just one word names: Tigereye, Yuni, Hazel, Sootie, Noble, Haggis, Ramsly, Zerk
I like to use one names for the poor class groups while the middle and upper get more names. Nothing says stuck up like a person calling themselves: Sofia Maria von Vander Merida of Noxbane.

I've taken to using normal names but then putting a different spelling on them. For example, I've got a noble who's recruiting adventurers into a franchised adventure group where h's trying to get a chapter in all the cities in Faerun. His name is Barabus Bloodwynd. Just change the "i" in wind to a "y". He has an assistant named Ragan Thornhill. Just dropped the "E" in Reagan.
A.k.a. the George R. R. Martin method.
Nope. This is totally an original idea that no one else has ever thought of. All me.
