"Why settle for one brain when several are better?" - Mindflayer, probably
Hey: I thought I might put this one to the chaotic masses of the internet. I'm presently running a homebrew campaign and need some inspiration for magic items to dangle in front of my players. Current scenario; the party are castaways, stranded on a tropical island full of dinosaurs, other dangerous mega-fauna, and ruins (think Kong: Skull Island or something to that effect); with its native population largely consisting of Yuan-TI/Serpentfolk. This particular strain of serpentfolk are a bit more lawful neutral/lawful good aligned than the standard lawful evil; still have the whole Aztec/Mayan general aesthetic though; stepped pyramid style construction, pantheon of winged serpent deities etc.; they'll be the ones to whom most of these artifacts belong, though things from the wider world could always wash up or find their way onto the island.
Current party consists of: Players: Moon Circle Druid, Great Old One Warlock & Swashbuckler Rogue. Support NPCs: Beast-master Ranger, Alchemist Artificer & Twilight Cleric.
I've made a number of magic items already, but as ever; stocking store shelves and filling dungeon chests and monsters can be a lot. So; if that outline gave you any ideas for magic items for me to tantalize my players with, fire away.
Bone Whip - usable by druid, ranger, rogue; base damage bludgeoning, extra damage necrotic, reach 30ft, chance to trip a creature (knocks prone); alternately use action to swing from scenery. Yes, it's Indiana Jones, but with skeletal weaponry instead of the traditional whip.
Sacrificial Club - a +1 club, but every killing blow with it grants an additional +2 to hit on the next attack
Sandals of the Serpent River - Ignores difficult terrain if caused by plants, swamps, bogs, or shallow water; cannot be grappled or restrained by plants or plant-based spells (e.g. Entangle)
Mask of the Jaguar (headwear) - +2 to Stealth, can cast Fear (3 charges, recharges at dawn)
Tyrannosaur-tooth necklace: +3 to Animal Handling against dinosaurs, +3 to Intimidation
Figurine of Wondrous Power: Quetzalcoatlus (can become a quetzalcoatlus for up to 6 hours, can be ridden as a mount)
Jade Uroburous: A terrifying symbol of doom and destruction to the Yuan-Ti. All Yuan-Ti starting their turn within 30ft of the object and able to see it must make a DC14 Wisdom saving throw or become Frightened of the wearer for 10 rounds (check each turn, effect ends on pass, those passing are immune for 24h)
Also, it's Basque and not meso-American, but I always thinki of jai alai and the basket like cesta. This "Sports equipment" is capable of hurling a ball LARGER than a sling's ammunition at TWICE the speed. I'd want to at least see this bad boy do 2d4 as a ranged simple weapon (and run in fear)....
these aren't even magical yet.
Armor, historically, the aztec would wear something like "padded armour" but the stuff was quality according to the internet.
then there's Xiuhcoatl the flame serpent, which is a piece of carved turquoise in the shape of a snake. it has 1 chain lightning charge and 2 chain lightning charges that recharge by the end of the day.
Then there's the rod of Xipe Totec - a rod about a foot long that is shaped like a stalk of corn. It has 2 charges of Wall of Thorns per day and allows the user to also cast thorn whip at will. Must be attuned, and reduces maximum HP by 10 points while it is equipped/attuned.
I'll let somene else do something with xolotl....That god can be turned into some pretty horrific monster s**t that would give most players nightmares...
Staff-sling is the game equivalent of a few traditional weapons.
Feather Cloaks: made of brightly colored feathers, they are long cloaks that have different properties -- pick your robe of or cloak of properties. Basic re-skin.
Metate. You have an artificer. A metate is basically a flat mortar and pestle, and if you are dealing with that kind of cultural basis, then you are also looking at a host of unique plants and their properties. A magical one could improve the artificers ability to locate key plants for different concoctions.

Crap, I just realized, if we are going into that area -- and presuming we have upper meso as well as central and coastal based on what you already noted), then we have to note the most important magical items for that region: food stuffs.
IT was Bob-The-fish that reminded me of it, indirectly, lol. The Wall of Thorns in some cases would be a wall of maize, because aside from maize being totally chill on the outside, and often terrifying as hell on the inside (because corn needs to be planted in proximity, lol, and does best in, um, decomp infused soil), it i also a sacred crop through most of the region.
in part because a lot of magic was related to food (well, magic in the sense we are looking at, but I will go off if I dont focus). Cooking, as an act, was an act of magic. The flesh of animals and people all had sacred roles and places, and Powers. Tink in terms of how western folks see the potions and medicals of Cunning Folk or witches, the alchemy trades, and that kind of thing.
Heavy on the buffs and debuffs, and they did love their dyes, powders, and dusts.

Childrenof the corn? lol.
People also forget how sharp corn leaves are...
Though corn mazes (or maize mazes), could be done with just the labyrinth/maze spell plus wall of thorns, and bumped up a level or two.

Seriously? No Macuahuitl yet? 1d6 simple weapon.

Snake Staff: Does fancy snake poison stuff, might turn into a snake.
Crystal Skull: casts hypnotic pattern, chromatic orb, or fear. Counts as arcane focus +1
Feather Cape: Creature can turn into a flying snake (or Couatl?) for 1 minute
Atlatl: Spear-Sling, maybe reskin of a +2 javelin with x uses per combat?

Thanks to all of you for some brilliant ideas; have already ported a couple into the loot tables and shop tables to come down the road.
