Hello all. This is my first post here, so hopefully I'm doing this right. Doubtless this base idea has been done in many different ways before, but I've been toying around with the concept of a lightning-based blade of legendary proportions recently, using screwing around with weapons as a sort of foray into Homebrewing with the goal of eventually running a home-brew game of my own. I've tossed around concepts and ideas with other D&D players I know as well as my current DM, and this is where the concept sits now. I'm pretty happy with what I've come up with, but I don't have the experience to know if this is over/underpowered at all. If anyone is interested, I would love to get some feedback on this.
You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. When you hit with an attack using this magic sword, the target takes an extra 2d6 lightning damage. In addition, while you hold the sword, you have resistance to lightning damage.
Lightning Strike. The sword has 4 charges. While holding it, you can use an Action to expend 1 charge to make a ranged attack against one target within 60 feet of you. On a hit, the target takes 8d6 lightning damage. On a natural 20, you may make an additional attack roll against a new target within 60 feet of the first. The sword regains 1d4-1 charges at dawn.
Lightning Rod. When you take lightning damage, roll 1d20. On a 10 or higher, the sword regains 1 charge.
I haven't thought too much about a background/story for this weapon, but I have a base concept of what might work? The idea is that a primordial/divine lightning bolt somehow came to rest on the material plane and a blacksmith eventually forged it into a weapon. Let me know what you think of this.
First, give it a chance to fully charge at dawn (1d4 instead of 1d4-1).
Second, for the lightning rod ability, it would be cool if you can use a reaction to negate the lightning damage of all creatures within 5 feet of you, but you take the damage instead.

I like this weapon. I have 2 suggestions:
First, give it a chance to fully charge at dawn (1d4 instead of 1d4-1).
Second, for the lightning rod ability, it would be cool if you can use a reaction to negate the lightning damage of all creatures within 5 feet of you, but you take the damage instead.
