I have an idea for a new playable race in my world - based upon the Lords of Cinder, from Dark Souls.
My idea is thus: Long ago, when the world was younge; everlasing dragons fought against the giant race in a great battle that had ravaged the world.
The smaller, weaker, mortal races would have become collateral damage in that war, had it not have been for the Lords of Cinder. Men and women from every mortal race who had sworn to put and end to this war.
Using all their power, they summoned a mighty leader of the only giant race, who had chosen not to fight - the LordLof rthe Eternal Flame, king of the Fire Giants, from the plane of elemental fire and asked that he interine and use his power to end the war
TheTgiant refused, sayin that fire did not care for the trials of mortal men, nore for the folly of dragons and besides, the war had it affected his people.
He was about to depart the material plane, when an army of dragons (who thought that the mfire giants had joined the fight) swooped down upon him.
Fire has little effectnon fire but the dragons knew this and had a plan. They cast a great magic circle around the giant, that dulled his flames and turned him into a sort of smoldering charcoal - they then shattered the gisnt, turning him to ash.
As he broke apart though, the mortals that had gathered to petition him for help, breathed in ash and in so doing, part of the giants soul. Those cinders took root, burning away their mortal souls and replacing them with itself - empowering them and turning them into Lords of Cinder.
Using their new found power, The Lords of Cunder, fought against the dragons and the other giants, driving them to the edges of the world.
Eons have passed since then, but the Lords of Cinder still keep watch, passing down their burdon to each sucessives generation and waiting for a time when they might be needed again.

It is an interesting idea, and a nice adaptation of the Dark Souls lore into D&D terms.
I'd only be curious as to how you would go about making the race, mechanically. I suspect you could give a good number of leve-scaling features, and maybe create various sub-races for different aspects manifested by the giant's soul...
Curious to see what you'd come up with :) (and I'd be happy to help if you want)
EDIT: You COULD also technically make this a base class, I guess, with the subclass choice and first feature(s) at 1st level, much like the Sorcerer bloodline... [or even one separate subclass for each class, but that would be extremely complicated and convoluted probably :P]
