So, I'm making an Insectoid homebrew race and I wanna know what you all think would be cool to have?
So far I've got several very broad, customizable subraces including Mantids, Stags, Stingers, Spiders, and Flyers. Run into a few roadblocks...
1. What size should I have them at? Fine, diminutive, tiny, small? I really don't wanna make them any bigger, like humanoid sized. Probably my biggest stump.
2. Any other broad categories I could split them into?
3. What language? They have a full society and diverse culture, should I give them their own language, or try something like Slyvan?
Sylvan sounds fine, maybe call an insectoid specific language "Grubbish" or just "Buggish" (because really we use insects as a broad umbrella term but that leaves out arachnids and small certain crustaceans like Rollie Pollies and centipedes and snails and... and pretty much anything that we saw in A Bug's Life would be the broad spectrum term for bugs overall).
Where was I?
Look into Hollow Knight and artist Thiago Lehmann who I'll leave a link to below
Hope to see the finished product in the near future :)
Size is a MAJOR game changer. If you do not want Medium, make them Small. Tiny or smaller causes a ton of lot problems.
Flight is a major issue. I would put significant limitations in a flying creature - consider having them molt at a certain level and THEN get flight. Lots of DM's do not allow the flying races like Aarakora. I would however suggest yo consider the following abilities: Glue, poison, web, Climb speed, MOLTING (not just for flight, do it twice or maybe they get the poison/glue/web after they molt).
Communication - forget about sound and get creative. Smell? Telepathy? Dance? (Bees dance).
