Hey guys, I'm starting work on a huge amount of homebrew and worldbuilding, ready for a Dauntless themed campaign. I have decided to start with the Behemoths, and have just made the Gnasher. Here is the link, please provide feedback, and help me to make it better. Thanks in advance.
Looks nice, but little low on hp. Im guesing this is because while enraged he has resistances.
But this is where it makes the monster a bit tricky to judge on difficulty. Because:
It doesnt have very high perception (to counter surprise). This makes sense for the creature so thats fine.
It doesnt have high initiative either so most likely what would happen is a party kills it before it even has the chance to enrage to get resistance. Because for CR3 its low hp and doesnt have high armor either. Without enrage this is more a CR 2 monster. Id probably give it the resistance all the time to make sure its tanky enough to survive a turn. Then simply use enrage to power its attacks. This way it still has an enrage making this a priority creature to kill in case of multiple enemies but without making it die all the time before it gets to act.
As for the attacks:
+4 is low for CR3 and there is no reason why it would attack better/more precise when enraged. Most other CR3 do +5/+6 to hit, but do far less damage. Not sure if the +2 dmg from rage goes ontop of the listed damage. Other CR3 do bout 7-10 dmg a hit and this one has multiattack. Making it multiattack is to much so that should not be the case since it already has high dmg. This will be a creature that a level 3 party fights, if the creature is enraged it would do an average of 32 dmg with 2 tail attacks. That will put any fighter at very low hp or knock them out if they were not at full.
Also it does not state if rage is an action for the creature or if it is a free action (in that case its always enraged on its turn and there would be little point in enraging apart from the dmg resistance)
To summarize and make it a creature like you seem to have build it:
Set to hit at +5 all the time.
Give it resistance all the time.
Have it enrage once it drops to half hp? as a trigger.(which can happen during the parties turn as they dmg it)
Reduce its dmg when not enraged and put it at where you have it now when it is.
This way it will be the rage threat but only if it is at lower hp for a last outburst. And will leave the option open to have 2 of the creatures fight the party without making them kill the party in one turn with stomp+tail x2. It will force the party to fight this creature in a specific way.
