Elandra nods, "Stealth is still something that we can benefit from in smaller scale. Just because the enemy knows we are coming does not mean that we can't break a few necks from the shadows before we charge the front door. Better still that we further divide the attention of the minions we face, for as far as I know, undead are not a hive mind. Just because the banshee knows how to find us, we can still get some benefits if we are sensible."
The statue looks at Koric and responds "I am mighty, but not indestructible. Fire will still scorch me much as any soldiers. With my magic though I am more protected from the simple blows of my enemies. If the spell were to be broken on the field of battle.... I dare not think of how vulnerable that would make me. It would certainly not be good"
He continues "It may be possible to sneak up on some of the undead, but it won't be long before Vyldara alerts them to our presence, and I am certainly not the stealthiest."
(( @DM: Koric previously thought that the statue might be able to be re-activated if necessary...does he need to be near it to do that? ))
Koric harrumphs, "Well...it seems that I should at least stay clear of the enemy, to avoid such an outcome. And..." he looks thoughtfully at his companions, "...anyone else who understands the magic should be ready to use it in case I fall."
"Perhaps out friend here should lead the charge...but not too fast. That may put the enemy in a position for me to use my magic to advantage, if we can get them t group up a little."
As the group gets closer, Koric will send Balthar up to assess the disposition of the enemy, and the lay of the land. He is also looking for choke points and defensible positions.
Jade nods to Elandra, accepting her logic on being stealthy. And to Soloth for their idea. "I myself am not stealthy and as Koric mentioned he should definitely stay back. Maybe some sneak in with stealth while others or just myself stay with the staute for the more frontal assault as we get to the battlefield? As for the catacombs? I'm not sure, I think we should take care of the threat that we see and then look further into this."
Liri has remained quiet until this point, a thoughtful look on her face as she tries to come up with any ideas that may help. "I am not terribly stealthy myself, but I could channel the form of a creature that is. Something that is both able to move quietly and still be a threat. A large spider perhaps?"
The statue responds "It may be possible. I assume it would take a good bit of strength though based on what you have said, but we could certainly seal it with our joint power!"
Also, you can recast the spell should it fail, but it would require making the arcana check again, and possibly being close enough to do it. Only way you'd really be able to find out all the details is if the spell breaks
As you all approach, the landscape pans out in front of you. You see a the plateau extends right into the wall of a mountain, where you can now make out the gates of Axeholm itself, as well as two entrances to the catacombs as well as a moat. It's full of what you assume is water, but the sickly green color of it is certainly off-putting. The path you have been following cuts through the plateau, the faded cobblestone leading up to a few wooden bridges across the moat. Other than that, the plateau is flat and clear, devoid of any large rock formations besides the mountain
The two ghasts and 4 ghouls Koric was describing are standing by the road, lumbering about, clearly waiting for your arrival. Vlydara herself is still nowhere to be seen, but the statue informs you all that she is most certainly here. Those of you trying to be stealthy break off from the group as the path slowly trends towards the left side of the plateau, hoping to sneak up while the rest of you continue on to draw the attention of the monsters
From what I understand, these are the groups: Attacking Directly: Statue, Jade, Norbus, Dazlyn Sneaking: Liri, Koric Elandra, Soloth, Lux, let me know who you'd like to go with, and then everyone trying to sneak roll stealth! Just know that if one person who is trying to be stealthy fails the monsters will likely notice the whole sneaking group.
@DM: Just checking, but do the rock-like markings on the ground signify anything? It looks like there is a path running north, but the enemies seem to be all on/in/behind these features, so I assume they are not high? Is there any cover?
Also...am I correct in assuming that we will all appear on the path in the SW corner?
The distance from #3 to the southwest corner is about 90', but many of us can attack from much greater range, and might well choose to do so if possible. Might even choose to approach from the south-central area, if rocks are passable. If rocks are not passable, then we might want to set up at a choke point.
In terms of the rocks, they are purely decorative. For the purposes of combat, they are level ground and do not constitute any cover
Those not attempting to be stealthy will appear on the path. Those attempting to sneak will appear closer to the SE corner (although obviously all the way in that corner as that would be too far)
What do you think? There's no cover so stealth looks a little difficult. Should we just remain as a group and rain arrows on them from 160'? Withdraw as they approach, then spells if/when they get closer?
(I'm good with that plan, or however we want to move forward, but would like to start! Jade is not sneaking and is fine starting with ranged on their way in.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As the two groups separate, Elandra take a moment to place her hand on Jade's shoulder, "Now seems like a good time to show these abominations what the wrath of Tempus looks like!" inspiring the stalwart paladin ahead of the coming battle. With that she sneaks off with Koric and Liri, taking care to flatten the plume on her hat lest the smallest detail give them away.
(OoC) @ party - I'd still go with attempts to stealth, it might be a small advantage, but if there is no terrain to support it then we know it is just a single use and we can carry on with the fight. At the moment I prefer entering in the SE corner, that group is the squishier, so if our main party with rocky and Lux supporting an draw the fire, it give us more time to do some damage.
I'm also fine with the main group raining missiles from as far s possible. I've got very little of use at any range unfortunately.
(( If we don't go with stealth, then Liri can try starting with produce flames for ranged, then wildshape into a dire wolf if we look like we're getting into melee. She also has entangle prepared which might help keep them at a distance for a bit longer ))
What's the final plan in terms of how you all would like to move forward? Would like to get combat started soon. It looks to me like the plan is not to sneak, but are certain people hoping to hang back a bit more on the battlefield than others? Going to simply advance it a few hours with Koric + Liri in the back and everyone else forward if I don't hear anything else, as they are the ones to have expressed interest in attempting to attack from afar
